Mikulski Continues to Fight for Fed Pay Raise

During her last year in office, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) will continue to advocate for a proposed 5.3% pay raise for federal employees, in addition to finding new money for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Mikulski, who serves as the vice chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, recently signed onto the Senate version of the Federal Adjustment of Income Rates (FAIR) Act, which would give federal employees a 5.3% pay raise.

“From the federal employees, they’re all advocating among members that we get the kind of allocations we need to do this,” said Mikulski.

Additionally, regarding the NIH, Mikulski has said she will “work [her] earrings off that the last appropriations for the NIH under Barbara Mikulski’s watch is going to be the best damn appropriations you’ve ever seen.”

Around 18,000 people are employed by the NIH at its Maryland location.

Included in NIH’s requested $33.1 billion for fiscal 2017 is $680 million for the National Cancer Moonshot, in addition to $195 million for the BRAIN Initiative and an additional $26 million as part of total pay costs. The total request has an increase of $825 million more than the approved fiscal 2016 budget.

Additionally, Sen. Ben Cardin, Maryland’s other Senator, is also supporting the pay increase and has said the raise would help alleviate the ongoing fight regarding locality pay.
