GOP Congressmen Introduce Bills to Eliminate Federal Agencies

Several single line bills have been introduced to terminate federal departments and agencies, including H.R. 861, which would eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and H.R. 899, which would do away with the Department of Education.

Both bills were introduced by Republican Congressmen, without any Democratic co-sponsors.

In a statement, Rep. Thomas Massie, lead sponsor of H.R. 899, stated, “Unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. should not be in charge of our children’s intellectual and moral development. States and local communities are best positioned to shape curricula that meet the needs of their students. Schools should be accountable. Parents have the right to choose the most appropriate educational opportunity for their children, including home school, public school, or private school."

President Trump has noted his desire to eliminate the EPA, though it is not within the powers of president to do so. Congress, however, does have that authority.
